For years, fat was treated as the enemy in healthy eating. People avoided oils, skipped
avocados, and sought anything labeled “fat-free.” Here’s something important to
understand: your body needs fat to function properly.
Healthy fats are essential for brain function, hormone production, nutrient absorption,
and overall health. The key isn’t eliminating fat from your diet. It’s choosing the right fats
and incorporating them into your meals.
One of my favorite ingredients to cook with is extra virgin olive oil. It’s packed with heart-
healthy unsaturated fats and adds incredible flavor to vegetables, proteins, and
homemade dressings. Avocados are another great option, providing healthy fats along
with fiber that helps keep you satisfied.
Don’t overlook foods like walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds. These
ingredients provide beneficial fats and can easily be added to oatmeal, smoothies,
salads, or snacks. Fatty fish like salmon and sardines are also excellent sources of
omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart health.
A common mistake is assuming that because a fat is healthy, unlimited portions are
fine. Fats are calorie-dense, so portion sizes still matter, especially when you’re working
toward specific fitness goals.
In the kitchen, small changes can make a big difference. Instead of relying heavily on
butter or creamy sauces, try roasting vegetables with olive oil, adding avocado to a
grain bowl, or making a dressing with olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic, and herbs.
Remember, fat also helps your body absorb certain vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E,
and K. A colorful salad with a little olive oil isn’t just delicious; it can also help your body
make better use of the nutrients on your plate.
Healthy eating isn’t about removing entire food groups. It’s about understanding how
different nutrients work together.
The next time you build your plate, don’t fear the fat. Choose quality sources, enjoy
them in balanced portions, and let them be part of a healthy lifestyle.
